Components of Tower Crane and how It Works at the Construction Area

A machine that can lift heavy items to heights with little human effort is a crane. Tower cranes are the main machines in any major construction area. These machines can rise to hundreds of feet into the air.

Every construction crew looks for a reliable tower crane supplier to provide a quality product for their construction area. These are used to lift concrete, steel, large tools such as generators and acetylene, and a wide range of other building materials.

Components of Tower Crane

With the capability of lifting a lot of weights, the tower crane is simple in both its function and construction. It comprises the following components.

The base is the most important part of the crane as it supports the complete structure of the tower crane. This is made of concrete. Before the construction starts, concrete will be poured a few weeks before. The crane is attached to the base.

Slewing Unit:

To enable the crane to rotate, the slewing unit comprises a gear and motor arrangement.

The truss-shaped columns that refer to the mast give the crane its working height. They are bottled to each other and other crane components, instead of being in one continuous column. The stability is transmitted to the crane with the concrete base and the mass columns. These also prevent cranes from overbalance.

Machinery Arm:

The machinery arm is also known as the counter jib. This is where the crane’s counterweights and pulleys are kept.

Working Arm:

The working arm is also known as the jib. This runs perpendicular to the mast and houses the load-lifting hook and trolley.

Trolley and Hook:

The major load-bearing component that hauls loads is the hook. It is attached to a trolley that allows the hook to move towards and away from the mast as well as elevate and lower it. This is accomplished with the help of the trolley’s wires and pulleys.

Operator cab:

The control center of the crane is the operator cab, and it is attached to the slewing unit. The operator has to climb the series of the ladder on the mast to get the cab.

Working Principle of Tower Crane:

The working of a tower crane machine is simple. It is designed in such a way that all overturning pressures are counteracted by the concrete pad and the counterweights are hanging off the machinery. A crane that is unloaded gets imbalanced by counterweights, and it becomes stable when hauling loads.

The weight of the items is pulled with a winch that is attached to the trolley with steel cables. Due to the gain of overturning forces, the stability of the crane is affected by the distance from the mast at which the load is hauled.

As compared to lighter loads that can be lifted away from the mast, heavier loads are lifted closer to the mast. This is to reduce the overturning forces. To prevent overloading, the crane carries a maximum load limit and a load-moment limit switch. These switches alert the operator when the threshold exceeds.
